A RESOLUTION
Celebrating the life of John Lukacs and extending condolences on
his passing.
WHEREAS, John Lukacs was born January 31, 1924, in Budapest,
Hungary; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Lukacs survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary
during his youth; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Lukacs fled to the United States once Hungary
became occupied and controlled by the Soviet Union; and
WHEREAS, In 1946, Mr. Lukacs became a professor of history at
Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Lukacs also served as a visiting professor at
Columbia University, Johns Hopkins University, La Salle
University and Princeton University; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Lukacs became an authority on Eastern European
history, World War II and the Cold War; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Lukacs published 35 books on these and other

subjects throughout his career; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Lukacs' book "Five Days in London" inspired the
Academy-Award-winning film "Darkest Hour"; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Lukacs continued to teach at Chestnut Hill
College for 48 years, until 1994; and
WHEREAS, On May 6, 2019, Mr. Lukacs passed away in his home
at 95 years of age; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Lukacs is preceded in death by two of his wives,
Helen Schofield and Stephanie Harvey, and is survived by his son
Paul Lukacs, daughter Annemarie Cochrane, stepchildren Charles
Segal, Peter Segal and Hilary Felton, and five grandchildren;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives celebrate the
life of John Lukacs and extend condolences to his family and
friends.
