A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of June 2019 as "Dairy Month" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Early records indicate that June started out as a
month that recognized the importance of dairy products for the
purpose of distributing extra milk during the warm months of
summer; and
WHEREAS, June was chosen in 1937 by grocer organizations
sponsoring "National Milk Month"; and
WHEREAS, By 1939, June became nationally recognized as "Dairy
Month"; and
WHEREAS, The United States Department of Agriculture and
Department of Health and Human Services created Dietary
Guidelines for Americans to reinforce the importance of
consuming three daily servings of dairy foods such as milk and

cheese; and
WHEREAS, Dairy is highlighted for providing three of the four
nutrients that are typically lacking in American diets: calcium,
potassium and vitamin D; and
WHEREAS, These nutrients play key roles in preventing heart
disease, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and
osteoporosis; and
WHEREAS, Cow's milk offers a superior nutrient package over
alternative beverages such as soy, almond, rice or coconut milk;
and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth has more than 6,500 dairy farms,
the most dairy farms in any state except Wisconsin; and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is ranked 6th in total milk
production nationally, with 525,000 cows producing more than
10.8 billion pounds of milk annually; and
WHEREAS, Dairy is the economic driver for this Commonwealth's
number one industry, agriculture; and
WHEREAS, The dairy industry supports this Commonwealth's
economy at a value of $14.7 billion a year and more than 52,000
jobs; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 85% of each dairy farm's income is
spent in the local community and each dairy farm dollar is
recycled 2.5 times throughout the local community; and
WHEREAS, "Dairy Month" offers an opportunity to honor dairy
farm families and the food processors who provide consumers with
a large variety of fresh and wholesome dairy products that
provide essential vitamins and nutrients; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
month of June 2019 as "Dairy Month" in Pennsylvania.
