A RESOLUTION
Honoring the 100th anniversary of Penelec.
WHEREAS, Starting in 1889, a number of small electric
companies began forming in southwestern Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, By 1916, it was clear that one company in Johnstown
was becoming the biggest of all the competitors and was looking
to make a conglomerate of the smaller companies; and
WHEREAS, On June 11, 1919, Penn Public Service Corporation
officially formed, which merged the smaller companies with the
larger competitor; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, Penn Public Service Corporation
would continue to bring in smaller electric companies and expand
geographically; and
WHEREAS, In 1927, the company adopted the name Penelec; and
WHEREAS, By the 1930s, the company had coal plants, a

hydroelectric generator and many generating stations; and
WHEREAS, In 1946, Penelec became part of General Public
Utility; and
WHEREAS, By 1956, Penelec joined seven other companies in one
of the world's most significant power interconnection systems,
the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland Interconnection; and
WHEREAS, In 2001, General Public Utility merged with
FirstEnergy; and
WHEREAS, In 2018, FirstEnergy closed the Beaver Valley
Nuclear Power Station in Pennsylvania in an effort to reduce
reliance on unsustainable energy sources, improve renewable
energy sources and promote electric vehicles; and
WHEREAS, 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the formation of
the Penn Public Service Corporation; and
WHEREAS, Penelec was one of the most significant innovators
in the early days of Pennsylvania's electric companies and its
legacy continues through the innovation and evolution of the
Pennsylvania power grid; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the 100th
anniversary of Penelec.
