A RESOLUTION
Designating June 1, 2019, as "Skip the Straw Day in
Pennsylvania."
WHEREAS, Plastic debris harms more than 1,200 species across
the globe; and
WHEREAS, Plastics, microplastics and plastic microfibers
contaminate mountain peaks and ocean trenches; and
WHEREAS, These materials and particles infiltrate our soil,
drinking water and the air we breathe; and
WHEREAS, Contributing to this crisis, Americans generate
waste from an estimated 500 million single-use disposable
plastic straws each day; and
WHEREAS, Banning, phasing out or otherwise reducing plastic
straw use involves small actions to change habits and broader
actions to change cultures; and
WHEREAS, Making straws available only on request is a start;
and
WHEREAS, Food and beverage concessionaires for the National

Park Service and other venues are adhering to offer-first
practices; and
WHEREAS, Straws manufactured from paper, compostable plastic,
glass, bamboo, corn or stainless steel are alternatives when
skipping the straw; and
WHEREAS, Antistraw initiatives include The Last Plastic
Straw, Be Straw Free, Choose to Refuse, Be the Solution to
Pollution, Strawless Summer and StopSucking; and
WHEREAS, Municipalities and venues in this Commonwealth are
beginning to address the challenges of plastic straw waste;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June 1,
2019, as "Skip the Straw Day in Pennsylvania."
