A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Morning Star Baptist
Church on June 2, 2019.
WHEREAS, The Morning Star Baptist Church is a community-based
ministry that serves Clairton, Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, The church formed following a split from Mount Olive
Baptist Church in Clairton; and
WHEREAS, On April 9, 1919, A.C. Glover, J.H. Presley, W.A.
Coley, A. Wiggins, Ernest Goodwin, Charles Williams, Randolph
Campbell, Mel Gunn, J. Ronnie Powell, Ida Glover, Emma Presley,
Annie Hamilton, Victoria Moore, Manola Bonner, Bendell Goodwin,
Ida Harbin, Elizabeth Powell, Della Williams, Mamie Smith,
Fannie Taylor and Bettie Whitside became the the founding
members of the Morning Star Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, In the fall of 1919, Reverend J.H. Garner from
Selma, Alabama, became Pastor of Morning Star Baptist Church;
and
WHEREAS, Reverend J.H. Garner's wife, Ella Garner, served as
the organist and organized the first choir; and

WHEREAS, The first service was held on the corner of Shaw and
Boundary Avenue in Clairton on December 20, 1919; and
WHEREAS, From May 31 through June 2, 2019, the Morning Star
Baptist Church will hold a centennial celebration; and
WHEREAS, The centennial celebration will include a centennial
gala, picnic and worship service to mark this joyous occasion;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
100th Morning Star Baptist Church on June 2, 2019.
