AN ACT
Amending Title 75 (Vehicles) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated
Statutes, in general provisions, further providing for
definitions; and, in other required equipment, providing for
side underride protection systems.
The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
hereby enacts as follows:
Section 1. Section 102 of Title 75 of the Pennsylvania
Consolidated Statutes is amended by adding a definition to read:
§ 102. Definitions.
Subject to additional definitions contained in subsequent
provisions of this title which are applicable to specific
provisions of this title, the following words and phrases when
used in this title shall have, unless the context clearly
indicates otherwise, the meanings given to them in this section:

"Side underride protection system." A system derived of an
apparatus installed between the front and rear wheels to help
reduce underride and prevent injuries to passenger vehicle
occupants, pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists,

particularly from falling underneath the vehicle.

Section 2. Title 75 is amended by adding a section to read:
§ 4538. Side underride protection systems.
Every trailer with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than
10,000 pounds and every truck tractor with a gross vehicle
weight rating of more than 26,000 pounds shall be equipped with
side underride protection systems.
Section 3. This act shall take effect in 60 days.
