AN ACT
Amending Title 75 (Vehicles) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated
Statutes, in penalties and disposition of fines, further
providing for inability to pay fine and costs.
The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
hereby enacts as follows:
Section 1. Section 6504 of Title 75 of the Pennsylvania
Consolidated Statutes is amended to read:
§ 6504. Inability to pay fine and costs.
(a) Order for installment payments.--Upon plea and proof
that a person is [unable] without the financial means to pay any
fine and costs imposed under this title, a court may, in
accordance with 42 Pa.C.S. § 9758 (relating to fine), order
payment of the fine and costs in installments and shall fix the
amounts, times and manner of payment.
(b) Imprisonment for nonpayment.--Any person who does not
comply with an order entered under this section may be
imprisoned for a number of days equal to one day for each $40 of
the unpaid balance of the fine and costs.

(c) Community service.--Upon plea and proof that a person is
without the financial means to pay a fine and costs imposed
under this title, a court may, in accordance with 42 Pa.C.S. §
9730 (relating to payment of court costs, restitution and
fines), order the performance of a reasonable period of
community service. Court-ordered community service may be
imposed under this subsection in lieu of payment of up to 50% of
the fine and costs originally imposed. The court ordering the
community service shall fix the duration, time and manner of the
performance of community service.
Section 2. This act shall take effect in 60 days.
