A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of May 13 through 19, 2018, as "National
Police Week" and designating May 7, 2018, as "Police
Officers' Memorial Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Since the beginning of law enforcement within this
Commonwealth, hundreds of police officers have made the ultimate
sacrifice while in the line of duty, including Police Officer
Brian David Shaw, New Kensington Police Department and Trooper
Michael Paul Stewart, III, Pennsylvania State Police; and
WHEREAS, Police Officer Shawn D. Rager, City of Johnstown
Police Department, died October 13, 2016; and
WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Scot Alan Moyer, Lehigh County
Sheriff's Office, died September 23, 2009, of a heart attack
shortly after apprehending a man during a warrant service; and
WHEREAS, Across the United States, the week of May 13 through
19, 2018, is being recognized as "National Police Week"; and
WHEREAS, The first "National Police Officers' Memorial Day"

was held on May 15, 1982, following a proclamation signed by
President John F. Kennedy on October 1, 1962; and
WHEREAS, The observance continues to be held annually in
memory of those police officers who have made the ultimate
sacrifice in the line of duty; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the memory of the hundreds of
police officers who have given their lives in the line of duty
in this Commonwealth; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of May 13
through 19, 2018, as "National Police Week" and designating May
7, 2018, as "Police Officers' Memorial Day" in Pennsylvania.
