A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of May 6 through 12, 2018, as "National
Travel and Tourism Week" and May 7, 2018, as "Tourism Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "National Tourism Week" was first celebrated in 1983
when the Congress of the United States passed a joint resolution
designating a week in May 1984 as "National Tourism Week" and,
in a White House ceremony, the President of the United States
signed a Presidential proclamation urging citizens to observe
the week with ceremonies and activities; and
WHEREAS, The travel and tourism industry of this Commonwealth
has selected May 7, 2018, as "Tourism Day"; and
WHEREAS, Tourism is Pennsylvania's second-largest industry
and a major contributor to the economy of this Commonwealth,
accounting for an annual economic impact of $41 billion; and
WHEREAS, Tourism supports a workforce of more than 489,000
individuals, with 1 out of every 16 jobs in this Commonwealth
relying on travel and tourism and related industries; and

WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is one of the most visited states
in the country, with an estimated 193 million visitors for
leisure and business travel annually; and
WHEREAS, Many small businesses are involved in the tourism
industry, and the hotels, restaurants, bed and breakfasts and
attractions that are run by these small businesses constitute an
important and vital segment of local economies across this
Commonwealth; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize May 6 through 12, 2018,
as "National Travel and Tourism Week" and May 7, 2018, as
"Tourism Day" in Pennsylvania.
