A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of April 16 through 20, 2018, as the "Week
of the Young Child" in Pennsylvania and supporting high-
quality early childhood education as the right choice for
young children in this Commonwealth.
WHEREAS, The "Week of the Young Child" is an annual
celebration sponsored by the National Association for the
Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the world's largest early
childhood education association, with nearly 60,000 members and
a network of 50 regional, State and local affiliates; and
WHEREAS, The purpose of the "Week of the Young Child" is to
focus public attention on the needs of young children and their
families and to recognize the early childhood programs and
services that meet those needs; and
WHEREAS, NAEYC first established the "Week of the Young
Child" in 1971, recognizing that the early childhood years,
birth through eight years of age, lay the foundation for
children's success in school and later life; and
WHEREAS, The central purpose of the "Week of the Young Child"

remains unchanged and is to promote the needs of young children,
their families and the early childhood programs that serve them;
and
WHEREAS, Activities to celebrate the week include:
(1) Music Monday - music develops mathematics, language
and literacy skills.
(2) Tasty Tuesday - cooking connects mathematics with
literacy skills and science.
(3) Work Together Wednesday - building explores
mathematics and science concepts and develops children's
social and early literacy skills.
(4) Artsy Thursday - art develops creativity, social
skills and fine motor skills.
(5) Family Friday - sharing family stories;
and
WHEREAS, Today we know more than ever about the importance of
children's earliest years in shaping their learning and
development, yet never have the needs of young children and
their families been more pressing; and
WHEREAS, The "Week of the Young Child" is a time to recognize
that children's opportunities are our responsibility and to
recommit ourselves to ensuring that each and every child
experiences the type of early environment at home, at child
care, at school and in the community that will promote their
early learning; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of April 16
through 20, 2018, as the "Week of the Young Child" in
Pennsylvania and support high-quality early childhood education
as the right choice for young children in this Commonwealth.
