A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of April 15 through 21, 2018, as
"Osteopathic Medicine Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, There are approximately 140,000 osteopathic
physicians and osteopathic medical students in the United
States, including a growing number of women and minorities; and
WHEREAS, There are more than 8,000 doctors of osteopathic
medicine in this Commonwealth who are dedicated to improving the
health of their communities by delivering quality health care to
their patients; and
WHEREAS, One in four medical students in the United States
attends an osteopathic medical school; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania benefits from the education of
osteopathic medical students at the Lake Erie College of
Osteopathic Medicine, the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic
Medicine at Seton Hill and the Philadelphia College of
Osteopathic Medicine; and
WHEREAS, Osteopathic physicians are trained to consider the
health of the whole person and to use their hands to diagnose

and treat patients; and
WHEREAS, Osteopathic physicians are fully licensed to
prescribe medicine and practice in all specialty areas of
medicine, including surgery; and
WHEREAS, The residents of this Commonwealth recognize the
need for osteopathic physicians who are committed to bringing
attention to improving the health of Americans regardless of
age, income level or ethnicity; and
WHEREAS, "National Osteopathic Medicine Week," observed April
15 through 21, 2018, focuses on the goal of increasing awareness
of osteopathic medicine and osteopathic physicians in
communities across the nation; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of April 15
through 21, 2018, as "Osteopathic Medicine Week" in
Pennsylvania.
