A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life and achievements of Andrew Wyeth, one of
America's best-known 20th century artists.
WHEREAS, Andrew Wyeth was born on July 12, 1917, in Chadds
Ford, Pennsylvania, the fifth child of Carolyn and Newell
Convers Wyeth, the great illustrator; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Wyeth's lifespan encompassed World War I, a
period that sparked the imagination of the artist as a young
boy, to the new millennium; and
WHEREAS, From 1935 through 1949, Mr. Wyeth became an emerging
presence in the art world, creating colorful, expressive
watercolors of the Maine coast; and
WHEREAS, During the 1950s, Mr. Wyeth focused his attention on
the landscape around his homes in Maine and Chadds Ford, where
he often painted the Kuerner Farm; and
WHEREAS, By 1968, Mr. Wyeth, recognized as one of America's
most famous artists, began to explore the realm of erotic art;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Wyeth's Helga paintings were famously kept

secret until the mid-1980s, when their revelation created a
national sensation; and
WHEREAS, Beginning in 1989, Mr. Wyeth's work became
particularly self-reflective and often enigmatic, infused with a
surreal quality; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Wyeth painted many of his most important works
in his Chadds Ford studio, which served as his principal
Pennsylvania workplace from 1940 through 2008; and
WHEREAS, The Andrew Wyeth Studio is a National Historic
Landmark and a member site of the Historic Artists' Homes and
Studios program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation;
and
WHEREAS, The Brandywine River Museum of Art, referred to as
the Andrew Wyeth Museum, is home to Mr. Wyeth's studio and the
Kuerner Farm, a major source of inspiration throughout his
career; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Wyeth created thousands of paintings and
drawings at Chadds Ford, inspired by its people, architecture
and landscapes; and
WHEREAS, On June 24, 2017, the Brandywine River Museum of Art
opened "Andrew Wyeth: In Retrospect," the first career
retrospective of the artist since his death in 2009; and
WHEREAS, "Andrew Wyeth: In Retrospect" commemorates the
centennial of Mr. Wyeth's birth and provides the most in-depth
exhibition of his paintings and drawings to date; and
WHEREAS, On July 12, 2017, in Chadds Ford, the United States
Postal Service is issuing Andrew Wyeth stamps, 12 designs slated
for nationwide sale to mark the centennial of Mr. Wyeth's birth;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the life and achievements of

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the Brandywine River Museum of Art, 1 Hoffman's Mill Road,
Chadds Ford PA 19317.
