A RESOLUTION
Designating February 6, 2017, as "Mutual Insurance Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is the birthplace of America's
insurance industry; and
WHEREAS, The first insurance company, The Philadelphia
Contributionship, a mutual insurance company founded by Benjamin
Franklin in 1752, is still meeting consumers' insurance needs
today; and
WHEREAS, Mutual insurance companies are a major economic
force in this Commonwealth with $3.4 billion or more in property
and casualty insurance premiums to meet the insurance needs and
resolve insurance claims for residents and businesses in this
Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Mutual insurance companies are also a significant
contributor to State and local governments because of the
premium taxes they pay to the State and property taxes they pay
to municipalities and school districts; and
WHEREAS, The contribution of mutual insurance companies to

Pennsylvania communities cannot be overstated given that mutual
insurance companies are at the core of community service,
community jobs and contribute significantly to the cultural and
social life of their communities; and
WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Association of Mutual Insurance
Companies has communicated the value of mutual insurance
companies to this Commonwealth and to Pennsylvania consumers by
observing "Mutual Insurance Day"; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate February 6, 2017, as
"Mutual Insurance Day" in Pennsylvania in honor of the 61st
observance of "Mutual Insurance Day" by the Pennsylvania
Association of Mutual Insurance Companies and wish the
management, employees and policyholders of mutual insurance
companies good fortune in the days to come.
