A RESOLUTION
Recognizing November 1, 2018, as "National Family Literacy Day"
in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Nurturing and enhancing reading, writing and
language skills benefit our families and our communities; and
WHEREAS, Regularly established family reading time fosters a
shared love of books, builds literacy and reinforces reading and
writing capabilities; and
WHEREAS, Literacy development begins with early exposure to
language, books and stories; and
WHEREAS, Early childhood interventions, early parenting
strategies, increased adult literacy and enhanced parental
support for a child's school-related functioning contribute to
literacy development; and
WHEREAS, Children raised in homes where family literacy is
promoted become better readers and have improved academic
performance; and

WHEREAS, Intergenerational family literacy programs in
schools and community-based organizations can include
instruction for English language learners and parenting
education; and
WHEREAS, Schools, libraries and other literacy organizations
are sponsoring special events to encourage the habit of reading
on "National Family Literacy Day"; and
WHEREAS, "National Family Literacy Day" highlights the
benefits of establishing family time for families and
communities when parents and children have an opportunity to
read together; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize
November 1, 2018, as "National Family Literacy Day" in
Pennsylvania.
