A RESOLUTION
Honoring Amazon for raising its minimum wage to $15 per hour.
WHEREAS, On October 2, 2018, Amazon's CEO, Jeff Bezos,
announced that Amazon will increase its minimum wage to $15 per
hour, affecting more than 250,000 employees and 100,000 seasonal
employees; and
WHEREAS, Amazon is a company with a market capitalization of
nearly $1 trillion; and
WHEREAS, Amazon is the only company in the United States to
offer all of its employees a guaranteed hourly wage of $15 per
hour; and
WHEREAS, Boosting the wages of workers increases their
income, providing them with more to spend on goods, which then
stimulates the economy and allows even more jobs to be created;
and
WHEREAS, On June 28, 2018, Governor Tom Wolf signed an
Executive Order which immediately increases the minimum wage for
executive branch employees to $12 per hour and raises the

minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2024; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's and the national minimum wage are
unchanged since 2009 at $7.25 per hour; and
WHEREAS, The average minimum pay worker is 36 years old,
works full time and earns half of the family total income; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 56% of minimum wage workers are women,
89% are over the age of 20 and 37% are over the age of 40; and
WHEREAS, Twenty-eight percent of the women who work for
minimum wage have children; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania should act expeditiously to increase
its minimum wage and give hundreds of thousands of
Pennsylvanians a pay raise; and
WHEREAS, Increasing the minimum wage by $1.75 increases
earnings for 400,000 Pennsylvanians by an estimated $840 million
per year; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania honor Amazon for increasing its
minimum wage to $15 per hour; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the General Assembly follow Amazon and
Governor Wolf and swiftly enact legislation increasing the
minimum wage; and be it further
RESOLVED, That all companies make a good-faith effort to
increase their minimum wage to $15 per hour; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the corporate headquarters of Amazon in Seattle, Washington.
