A RESOLUTION
Honoring East Stroudsburg University as it celebrates the 125th
anniversary of its founding.
WHEREAS, In 2018, East Stroudsburg University celebrates the
125th anniversary of its founding; and
WHEREAS, East Stroudsburg University traces its roots back to
1893 with the opening of the East Stroudsburg Normal School, a
private preparatory school for teachers that welcomed 320
students; and
WHEREAS, In 1897, 62 women and 12 men became the first
graduating class of the East Stroudsburg Normal School; and
WHEREAS, In 1920, the ownership of East Stroudsburg Normal
School was transferred to the Commonwealth and became East
Stroudsburg State Normal School with the appointment of a new
nine-member board of trustees; and
WHEREAS, In 1926, East Stroudsburg State Normal School became

a four-year teacher's college, and the following year the school
was renamed State Teachers College at East Stroudsburg, commonly
referred to as East Stroudsburg State Teachers College; and
WHEREAS, In 1960, the college further evolved with the
addition of more curricula and became a comprehensive State
college known as East Stroudsburg State College; and
WHEREAS, In 1962, the college began offering courses leading
to master of education degrees in biology, general science and
health and physical education; and
WHEREAS, Five years later, the college added master's degree
programs in history, political science and elementary education;
and
WHEREAS, In 1983, under the authorization of the Pennsylvania
State System of Higher Education, the college officially became
East Stroudsburg University; and
WHEREAS, In 2018, East Stroudsburg University features a
diverse student body surpassing 6,700 undergraduate and graduate
students and has expanded to offer 57 undergraduate degree
programs, 21 master's degree programs and one doctoral degree
program; and
WHEREAS, Today, East Stroudsburg University's vision for the
future includes serving as an innovative and entrepreneurial
learning center of the 21st century that is committed to its
local community; and
WHEREAS, East Stroudsburg University has a rich history and
cultural heritage spanning the last 125 years that is being
celebrated by its students, alumni, administration, faculty,
staff and local community; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor East
Stroudsburg University as it celebrates the 125th anniversary of

its founding; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives join the
students, alumni, administration, faculty, staff and local
community of East Stroudsburg University in celebrating the
125th anniversary of its founding.
