A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the bicentennial of the United States District Court
for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Founded April 20, 1818, the United States District
Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania is part of the
United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit; and
WHEREAS, Originally, a United States District Court for the
District of Pennsylvania was established in 1789; and
WHEREAS, The United States District Court for the District of
Pennsylvania was split into an Eastern District and a Western
District in 1818; and
WHEREAS, In 1901, the courts were again divided to create the
Middle District of Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, Now, the court is located in Pittsburgh, Erie and
Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and is comprised of ten judges; and
WHEREAS, The United States District Court for the Western
District of Pennsylvania has heard many notable cases, including
a number of organized crime, gang and RICO cases and the Curtis
Strong case involving the dealing of drugs to high profile Major

League Baseball players; and
WHEREAS, On June 1, 2018, a "Celebration of Liberty and
Justice for All" will be held in honor of the bicentennial of
the United States District Court for the Western District of
Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, The event will include reflections and discussions
on the history of court and the unveiling of the Historic Eagle;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
bicentennial of the United States District Court for the Western
District of Pennsylvania.
