A RESOLUTION
Designating June 8, 2018, as the first annual "Thomas Paine Day"
in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Thomas Paine, a founding father and leader of the
American Revolution, peer of George Washington, James Madison,
Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, was one of the most
brilliant political philosophers of his time; and
WHEREAS, Thomas Paine published a pamphlet entitled "Common
Sense," setting forth his argument in favor of American
independence and supported the American Revolution through
personal service, his fortune and his drafting of "The American
Crisis"; and
WHEREAS, Thomas Paine was an early proponent of universal and
equal education for male and female children, equality for
women, religious freedom and he suggested an alliance of neutral
countries in conflicts between nations; and
WHEREAS, His life and work continue to inspire individuals

who seek liberty and democracy throughout the world; therefore
be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June 8,
2018, as the first annual "Thomas Paine Day" in Pennsylvania;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the
residents of this Commonwealth to take note of this day in honor
of Thomas Paine and his accomplishments.
