A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of May 2018 as "Necrotizing Fasciitis
Awareness Month" and May 31, 2018, as "Necrotizing Fasciitis
Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Necrotizing fasciitis is an uncommon clinical
disease that leads to the degradation of skin tissue and is
commonly referred to as a flesh-eating bacteria or infection;
and
WHEREAS, Necrotizing fasciitis was first defined within the
medical community in 1883 by Jean Alfred Fournier and was
described as a disease of unknown causes; and
WHEREAS, Necrotizing fasciitis is a serious infection that
may be caused by more than one type of bacteria, including Group
A Streptococcus and Staphylococcus aureus, as well as bacteria
naturally found in the intestines of healthy individuals; and
WHEREAS, Necrotizing fasciitis can occur in any age group,
but it is most commonly associated with surgical procedures; and

WHEREAS, Necrotizing fasciitis may also be seen in people
with diabetes mellitus, atherosclerotic vascular disease,
malignancy and hypertension; and
WHEREAS, In rare occasions, necrotizing fasciitis may occur
following minor injuries to the skin caused by falls or cuts and
has been known to occur in healthy individuals; and
WHEREAS, Necrotizing fasciitis can affect any part of the
body but most commonly involves the abdomen, arms, legs,
extremities and face, particularly around the eyes; and
WHEREAS, While progress has been made in understanding the
symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis and better diagnosing this
disease, there is still much to learn about necrotizing
fasciitis; and
WHEREAS, With increased research, the goals of discovering
the cause of the disease, improving treatment and finding a cure
are attainable; and
WHEREAS, It is of vital importance to raise public awareness
of necrotizing fasciitis to help promote early diagnosis, proper
management and treatment; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives desires to acknowledge
and honor both the survivors of necrotizing fasciitis as well as
those who have lost their battle to this disease; therefore be
it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
month of May 2018 as "Necrotizing Fasciitis Awareness Month" and
May 31, 2018, as "Necrotizing Fasciitis Awareness Day" in
Pennsylvania.
