A RESOLUTION
Designating April 28, 2018, as "Workers' Memorial Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Each year on April 28, communities and worksites
around the world honor friends, family members and colleagues
who have been killed or injured on the job; and
WHEREAS, In 2016, the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics
reported that a total of 5,190 workers suffered fatal workplace
injuries, the highest rate since 2008 when more than 5,214 fatal
injuries occurred; and
WHEREAS, During 2016, approximately 2.9 million nonfatal
work-related injuries and illnesses occurred; and
WHEREAS, During 2016, 163 workers lost their lives due to
workplace accidents in this Commonwealth, a decrease from 173
fatal workplace accidents in 2015; and
WHEREAS, Fatal occupational injuries in this Commonwealth

have ranged from a high of 354 in 1994 to a low of 163 in 2016;
and
WHEREAS, In 2016, the largest number of fatalities in this
Commonwealth occurred in the transportation and warehousing
sector, including the truck transportation sector, followed by
the manufacturing sector; and
WHEREAS, The second largest number of fatalities in this
Commonwealth occurred in the construction industry, including
specialty trade contractors; and
WHEREAS, While news reports often focus our attention on
disastrous workplace events, most of these workers die
individually with little public attention; and
WHEREAS, It is appropriate to honor the memory of the
courageous and dedicated members of this Commonwealth's
workforce who have been injured or disabled or who have died as
a result of workplace accidents or occupational diseases; and
WHEREAS, It is appropriate to recognize the integrity and
achievements of this Commonwealth's workforce and the resulting
economic growth of our Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, It is appropriate to call for vigilance and
increased safety in the workplace; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives desires to pay tribute
to workers who have been injured or disabled or who have died as
a result of workplace accidents or occupational diseases; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives wishes to honor the
contributions of this Commonwealth's workforce and calls for
increased workplace safety; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate April
28, 2018, as "Workers' Memorial Day" in Pennsylvania.
