A RESOLUTION
Designating the week of April 15 through 21, 2018, as
"Pittsburgh Life Sciences Week 2018" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The life sciences are the branches of science that
deal with living organisms and life processes, including fields
such as biology, medicine, biotechnology and many more; and
WHEREAS, The Department of Community and Economic Development
reports that more than 78,000 Pennsylvanians work in life
sciences fields, which represent an employment concentration 10%
greater than the national average and establish the Commonwealth
as an international leader in life sciences research and
development, innovation, investment and patenting; and
WHEREAS, The City of Pittsburgh and its greater metropolitan
area comprise a diverse life sciences community, featuring
pharmaceutical, medical device, diagnostic and biotech
companies; and
WHEREAS, The Commonwealth's position at the global forefront

of the life sciences is owed, in part, to the academic and
research programs at its world-class colleges and universities;
and
WHEREAS, The University of Pittsburgh, established in this
Commonwealth more than 230 years ago, is a renowned State-
related institution committed to research in the life sciences,
educating future scientists and cultivating new health care
innovations; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of the important contribution that
the life sciences community plays in this Commonwealth's economy
and quality of life, the University of Pittsburgh hosts the
second annual "Pittsburgh Life Sciences Week" from April 16
through 20, 2018; and
WHEREAS, "Pittsburgh Life Sciences Week 2018" brings together
the members of this vital community and creates a platform for
them to network and collaborate; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
week of April 15 through 21, 2018, as "Pittsburgh Life Sciences
Week 2018" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend the
leadership and planners of "Pittsburgh Life Sciences Week 2018"
on their work to showcase and strengthen the Greater Pittsburgh
area's role in this Commonwealth's life sciences community.
