A RESOLUTION
Recognizing July 2, 2018, as the 100th anniversary of Mercy
Philadelphia Hospital.
WHEREAS, In 1913, the Most Reverend Edmond Francis
Prendergast, the third Archbishop of Philadelphia, asked the
Sisters of Mercy to build a much-needed hospital in West
Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, The groundbreaking ceremony for the new hospital, to
be named Misericordia Hospital, was held on October 24, 1915,
and the hospital opened its doors on July 2, 1918; and
WHEREAS, The hospital began its graduate medical education
program in 1936, accepting its first medical and surgical
interns at both Misericordia and Mercy Fitzgerold Hospitals; and
WHEREAS, During the 1940s and 1950s, the hospital experienced
much growth, including the construction of new wings and the
expansion of the operating room suite and the radiology,
pathology and obstetrics and gynecological departments; and

WHEREAS, Teaching at the hospital also expanded to include
residencies in surgery, and the School for Practical Nursing was
opened on July 3, 1966; and
WHEREAS, Through a merger between Catholic Health East and
Trinity Health, a new organization, CHE Trinity Health, was
formed; and
WHEREAS, This new organization and parent company for Mercy
Health System represented the second largest Catholic health
care provider in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Since its incorporation, Mercy Philadelphia Hospital
has exhibited the highest quality of standards in medical
practice and has worked to improve the quality of life for
countless residents; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
100th anniversary of Mercy Philadelphia Hospital on July 2,
2018.
