A RESOLUTION
Designating March 19, 2018, as "Celebrating Women in Public
Office Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The month of March is "Women's History Month" and
celebrates the significant contributions women of all races,
ethnicity and background have made to the world; and
WHEREAS, While the 20th century was a pivotal time of growth
for women entering politics, women remain underrepresented in
male-dominated fields; and
WHEREAS, Women make up 22% of the United States Senate and
19.3% of the United States House of Representatives; and
WHEREAS, Nationally, women make up 26.2% of State House seats
and 22.5% of State Senate seats; and
WHEREAS, In this Commonwealth, women make up 20.1% of the
House of Representatives seats and 14% of Senate seats; and
WHEREAS, Women account for 51% of the population of this

Commonwealth but only constitute 18.9% of the Pennsylvania
General Assembly; and
WHEREAS, A woman has never served as governor of this
Commonwealth and no woman currently holds any Statewide
executive office; and
WHEREAS, There are currently no women serving in
Pennsylvania's congressional delegation and there has never been
a female senator from this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania was given the second lowest grade in
the United States according to the Gender Parity Index, a system
that rates women's electoral success at the Federal, state and
local levels; and
WHEREAS, Providing opportunities to support women in public
office is imperative; and
WHEREAS, Women play a critical role in the vitality and
diversity of our communities and are essential to ensuring that
this Commonwealth is well-represented; and
WHEREAS, Recognizing women in public office brings awareness
to the fundamental necessity of their work and inspires other
young women to serve their communities; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives, noting the positive
perspective a woman's point of view may bring in politics, is
committed to encouraging women to participate in the political
process; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate March
19, 2018, as "Celebrating Women in Public Office Day" in
Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the residents of this Commonwealth unite as we
support women in public office and observe March 19, 2018, with
appropriate activities, events and programs.
