A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of March 2018 as "National Social Work
Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The primary mission of social workers is to help
individuals who need assistance with social problems and life
complications; and
WHEREAS, More than 650,000 individuals in the United States,
including 40,000 in Pennsylvania, hold social work degrees; and
WHEREAS, Social workers connect individuals, families and
communities to available resources; and
WHEREAS, March 2018 marks the 63rd anniversary of the
National Association of Social Workers, founded in 1955; and
WHEREAS, Over the past six decades, the National Association
of Social Workers and the social work profession have created
positive changes in society and for individuals; and
WHEREAS, Social workers also make a difference in the lives

of millions of Americans by helping to build, support and
empower positive family and community relationships; and
WHEREAS, Social workers endeavor to make sure that everyone
has access to the same basic rights, protections and
opportunities; and
WHEREAS, Social workers have worked to improve the rights of
women, African Americans and other ethnic minorities and the
LGBT community; and
WHEREAS, Social workers are often the driving force behind
important social movements in the United States and abroad; and
WHEREAS, Social workers have also pushed to strengthen the
social safety net through programs, including Medicaid, Medicare
and the Affordable Care Act; and
WHEREAS, Social workers have advocated for social justice
initiatives, including the Voting Rights Act and the Community
Mental Health Act; and
WHEREAS, There are more than 40 schools of social work in
this Commonwealth, making Pennsylvania the second largest
educator of social workers nationwide; and
WHEREAS, More than 11,000 licensed social workers practice
throughout Pennsylvania, making social workers the largest
provider of mental health services in this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, All individuals, no matter the circumstance, may at
some point in their lives need the expertise of a skilled social
worker; and
WHEREAS, As the need for social work services increases, it
is imperative for more social workers to be recruited and
educated to ensure that the necessities of a growing client base
are met; and
WHEREAS, The theme for this year's "National Social Work

Month" is "Social Workers: Leaders. Advocates. Champions."; and
WHEREAS, This year's theme informs the public about the past
and present role of social workers in helping the most
vulnerable people in our society, as well as their role in
improving the lives of all Americans; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
month of March 2018 as "National Social Work Month" in
Pennsylvania and call upon all residents of this Commonwealth to
join with the National Association of Social Workers -
Pennsylvania Chapter, to celebrate and support social workers
and the social work profession.
