A RESOLUTION
Designating April 28, 2018, as "Workers' Memorial Day" in
Pennsylvania in memory of workers killed, injured and
disabled in the workplace and in recognition of the efforts
of the Greater Wilkes-Barre Labor Council.
WHEREAS, Every year in America, a great number of workers are
killed as a result of workplace injuries and occupational
diseases; and
WHEREAS, The Federal Bureau of Labor and Statistics has
reported that in 2016, more than 5,190 workers suffered fatal
injuries in the workplace and nearly 2.9 million individuals
suffered nonfatal work-related injuries and illnesses; and
WHEREAS, In 2015, 173 Pennsylvania workers lost their lives
due to fatal accidents in the workplace; and
WHEREAS, While the official "National Workers' Memorial Day"
is celebrated annually on April 28, the Greater Wilkes-Barre
Labor Council and other concerned residents are determined to
prevent these tragedies with a local observation of "National
Workers' Memorial Day" on April 26, 2018, as a day to remember
these victims of workplace injuries; and

WHEREAS, Through the local observance of this day, the
Greater Wilkes-Barre Labor Council renews efforts to seek
stronger safety and health protections, better standards and
enforcement and fair and just compensation, and improve the
health and safety of every American workplace; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate April
28, 2018, as "Workers' Memorial Day" in Pennsylvania in memory
of workers killed, injured and disabled in the workplace and in
recognition of the Greater Wilkes-Barre Labor Council's efforts
and the 11th annual local "Workers' Memorial Day" program and
candlelight vigil service.
