A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the tremendous work of the Lighthouse Youth Center
for its religious efforts in the lives of the youths of the
greater Oxford community for the past 30 years and
designating January 31, 2018, as "Lighthouse Youth Center
Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The Lighthouse Youth Center has served the greater
Oxford community for the past 30 years; and
WHEREAS, In early 1986, community residents began meeting to
seriously discuss the establishment of a youth center to serve
the greater Oxford community; and
WHEREAS, Over time, these discussions grew into actions with
tangible results with the formation of a board of directors and
the hiring of the first director of the youth center; and
WHEREAS, The Lighthouse Youth Center, first located in a
space formerly used as a flooring store in downtown Oxford,
opened its doors for the first time on Super Bowl Sunday, 1988,
with 41 youths in attendance; and
WHEREAS, With continued support from the local community and
the hand of divine providence, the Lighthouse Youth Center grew

remarkably over the years, eventually purchasing and extensively
renovating the building it had rented for many years; and
WHEREAS, The Lighthouse Youth Center has provided children
and youths from all racial and socioeconomic backgrounds with a
safe place to gather after school to play games, get help with
homework, learn life skills, deepen their faith, establish a
mentor relationship and eat dinner; and
WHEREAS, In January 1995, Mr. Buzz Tyson became director of
the Lighthouse Youth Center; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Tyson has helped to bring about a tremendous
expansion in the services provided to the children and youths of
the greater Oxford community; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Tyson has become widely respected and admired
throughout Chester County for his sincere and dedicated service
to children; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure, Mr. Tyson has simultaneously
raised funds for the continued operation and expansion of the
ministry, recruited new volunteers and established mutually
beneficial partnerships with local churches and businesses; and
WHEREAS, The Project Blessing Capital Campaign, established
in December 2012, united the greater Oxford community in an
effort to purchase property and build a new, permanent home for
the Lighthouse Youth Center and provide additional opportunities
for the betterment of the community's children; and
WHEREAS, The campaign raised more than $2.5 million to date
and led to the construction of a beautiful new facility on
Commerce Street in Oxford; and
WHEREAS, The Lighthouse Youth Center has served nearly 400
youths over the past year and continues to provide a safe space
to grow and develop for some of the most vulnerable populations

in the greater Oxford area; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
tremendous work of the Lighthouse Youth Center for its religious
efforts in the lives of the youths of the greater Oxford
community for the past 30 years; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate January
31, 2018, as "Lighthouse Youth Center Day" in Pennsylvania; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be sent to the
Lighthouse Youth Center, 245 Commerce Street, Oxford, PA 19363.
