A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of January 2018 as "National Blood Donor
Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, January has been recognized as "National Blood Donor
Month" since 1970 to acknowledge the lifesaving contributions of
blood and platelet donors; and
WHEREAS, The goal of "National Blood Donor Month" is to
increase blood and platelet donations during the winter, which
is traditionally one of the most difficult times of the year to
collect blood products; and
WHEREAS, During the winter months, inclement weather often
results in canceled blood drives; and
WHEREAS, During the winter months, seasonal illnesses such as
the flu may cause some donors to become temporarily unable to
donate, and busy holiday schedules can make it difficult for

blood donors to keep appointments; and
WHEREAS, Traumatic injuries on icy roads brought by winter
weather can lead to an increase in the need for blood; and
WHEREAS, A single car accident victim may require as many as
100 pints of blood; and
WHEREAS, Every two seconds someone in the United States needs
blood; and
WHEREAS, Many sophisticated medical procedures, including
organ transplants and heart surgeries, rely on blood
transfusions; and
WHEREAS, Hospital patients nationwide need approximately
44,000 blood donations daily for cancer care, surgeries and the
treatment of serious diseases and trauma; and
WHEREAS, Approximately one pint of blood is given during a
donation, which has the potential to save up to three lives; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 36,000 units of blood are needed each
day in the United States to save the lives of cancer patients,
accident, burn and trauma victims, newborn babies, mothers
delivering babies, transplant patients, surgery patients and
others in need; and
WHEREAS, Although an estimated 38% of the population of the
United States is eligible to donate blood at any given time,
less than 10% of that eligible population actually donate blood
each year; and
WHEREAS, Donating blood is a safe and simple process that
millions of Americans are able to do and millions more rely on
for medical care; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
month of January 2018 as "National Blood Donor Month" in
Pennsylvania.
