A RESOLUTION
Designating December 4, 2017, as "Grange Recognition Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The National Grange of the Order of Patrons of
Husbandry, which was founded December 4, 1867, is celebrating
its sesquicentennial anniversary in 2017 and 2018; and
WHEREAS, The Grange was founded as an organization created to
promote the economic, social, family values and community
interests of farmers and other rural Americans; and
WHEREAS, The outcomes of Grange advocacy have a positive
impact on our nation today as a result of accomplishments such
as rural free delivery of mail to rural families, the expansion
of rural electrification and the promotion of the Cooperative
Extension System and agricultural institutions of higher
education; and
WHEREAS, The Grange currently advocates for enhancing rural
health care and expanding broadband, cellular telephone and

Internet services to rural areas; and
WHEREAS, Two of the Grange's original seven founders,
Reverend Aaron B. Grosh and William M. Ireland, who were laid to
rest in Marietta and Philadelphia respectively, were residents
of this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Keystone State leadership continues to this day with
Commonwealth resident Betsy Huber currently serving as the first
woman president of the Grange; and
WHEREAS, Some high-profile Grange members included President
Harry S. Truman, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, First Lady
Eleanor Roosevelt and painter Norman Rockwell; and
WHEREAS, Currently, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic serves as
President of the Grays River Grange in Washington State; and
WHEREAS, The Grange continues to be a positive advocate for
rural America and an active community-building force nationally
and in this Commonwealth since 1873 when the first Grange, Eagle
Grange in Lycoming County, was established; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate
December 4, 2017, the sesquicentennial anniversary of the
Grange's founding, as "Grange Recognition Day" in Pennsylvania
to recognize the contribution of the Grange to our nation and
this Commonwealth.
