A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the continued commitment of Congress to eradicating
cancer through additional funding to the National Institutes
of Health and other important cancer programs in the most
recent appropriation bill.
WHEREAS, The Congress of the United States, in a bipartisan
2017 funding deal, increased the National Institutes of Health's
appropriation by $2 billion; and
WHEREAS, An additional $475 million has been appropriated to
the National Cancer Institute; and
WHEREAS, This budget agreement will maintain funding levels
for cancer control programs at the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, including the National Breast and Cervical
Cancer Early Detection Program; and
WHEREAS, Cancer will affect more than 1,700,000 Americans
this year, making prevention and early detection so vitally
important; and
WHEREAS, Protecting funding for screening and testing in the

battle against cancer is vital, as prevention is the most potent
weapon in the cancer fighting arsenal; and
WHEREAS, Congress has also included money to help deter the
most preventable sources of cancer, specifically, tobacco use;
and
WHEREAS, The Office on Smoking and Health lead the Federal
effort to stop youths and adults from smoking, and plays an
important role in keeping tobacco-related cancer cases to a
minimum; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recognize Congress for making the
fight against cancer a priority in their spending plan; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge Congress to
continue funding cancer programs aggressively into 2018 so we
can once and for all eradicate cancer; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to
the President of the United States, the presiding officers of
each House of Congress and each member of Congress from
Pennsylvania.
