A RESOLUTION
Congratulating Head Coach Dawn Staley of the University of South
Carolina on winning the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball
National Championship in Dallas, Texas, on April 2, 2017.
WHEREAS, A native of North Philadelphia, Dawn Staley earned
status as the national high school player of the year while
attending Murrell Dobbins High School in the School District of
Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, Coach Staley maintained her passion for the game of
basketball while attending the University of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, As a player there, Coach Staley carried three teams
to the NCAA Final Four; and
WHEREAS, Coach Staley was recognized as a three-time All-
American during her college years and holds the NCAA career
record of 454 steals; and
WHEREAS, Under Coach Staley's leadership, the South Carolina
Gamecocks recently captured the NCAA national championship title

with a 67-55 win over Mississippi State University; and
WHEREAS, The team, having compiled an overall record of 33-4,
attained the top national ranking for the first time in the
program's history; and
WHEREAS, The Gamecocks were semifinalists in the 2015 NCAA
national championship tournament; and
WHEREAS, Coach Staley's association with the University of
South Carolina began in May 2008; and
WHEREAS, Beginning in 2000, Coach Staley led the Temple
University women's basketball team in six NCAA tournament
appearances; and
WHEREAS, Coach Staley attained distinction at Temple
University, her first coaching position, as the fastest to reach
100 victories and the winningest, with a 172-80 record; and
WHEREAS, With USA Basketball, Coach Staley was a three-time
Olympic gold medalist; and
WHEREAS, With the WNBA, Coach Staley was a member of the WNBA
All-Decade Team and established the Dawn Staley Community
Leadership Award to honor a player who exemplifies leadership
characteristics in her community; and
WHEREAS, The Dawn Staley Foundation in Philadelphia, a
nonprofit out-of-school program offering academic, athletic and
community service enrichment opportunities for middle school
girls, assists students in developing leadership skills, civic
pride and self-confidence; and
WHEREAS, Inner Sole, an international nonprofit organization
cofounded by Coach Staley, is dedicated to providing new shoes
for homeless children and other children in need; and
WHEREAS, Coach Staley's teams consistently reflect strong
interpersonal connections as well as a strong commitment to

discipline and the hard work of team building; and
WHEREAS, As with her coaching, Coach Staley's nonprofit
initiatives generously reflect her wishes for the success of all
young people; and
WHEREAS, In playing and teaching the game of basketball and
in her entrepreneurial and philanthropic endeavors, Coach Staley
has motivated, mentored and inspired others in keeping with
these two mottos:
A disciplined person can do anything; and
Dare to do what you don't want to get what you do
want;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate Head
Coach Dawn Staley of the University of South Carolina on winning
the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship in
Dallas, Texas, on April 2, 2017.
