A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of April 2017 as "National Donate Life
Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, In 2016, according to Donate Life America, more than
33,000 patients' lives were saved by transplants; and
WHEREAS, More than 118,000 men, women and children await
organ transplants; and
WHEREAS, Another person is added to the national organ
transplant waiting list every 10 minutes; and
WHEREAS, A kidney from a living donor offers patients an
alternative to years on dialysis and time spent on the national
transplant waiting list; and
WHEREAS, Each year, there are approximately 30,000 tissue
donors and more than 1 million tissue transplants; and
WHEREAS, A single tissue donor can help 75 people; and
WHEREAS, Nearly 48,000 patients have their sight restored

through corneal transplants each year; and
WHEREAS, More than 134 million people, or approximately 54%
of the United States adult population, are registered donors;
and
WHEREAS, According to the United Network for Organ Sharing
(UNOS), in 2015, more than 30,000 transplants were performed in
a single year for the first time in the United States, a
milestone attained through the generosity of donors and their
families; and
WHEREAS, The national transplant allocation system developed
by UNOS coordinated 500,000 organ transplants from deceased
donors in the United States from UNOS' inception in October 1987
through May 2015; and
WHEREAS, More than 250,000 of those recipients are alive
today; and
WHEREAS, According to Donate Life PA, 4.6 million
Pennsylvanians have said "yes" to organ and tissue donation by
adding the donor designation on their driver's license; and
WHEREAS, More than 7,700 men, women and children in this
Commonwealth are awaiting lifesaving organ transplants; and
WHEREAS, In this Commonwealth, an average of nine people die
each day and 450 people die each year awaiting a lifesaving
organ transplant; and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth has 18 transplant centers and is
recognized as a world leader in organ and tissue
transplantation; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
month of April 2017 as "National Donate Life Month" in
Pennsylvania and acknowledge the generosity of donors and their
families and the continuing need for organ and tissue donation.
