A RESOLUTION
Recognizing March 22, 2017, as "World Water Day" in Pennsylvania
in conjunction with the 2017 "World Water Day" international
observance designated by the General Assembly of the United
Nations.
WHEREAS, Access to water is a fundamental human need; and
WHEREAS, Safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene prevent
disease and save children's lives; and
WHEREAS, Water scarcity and water shortages impact billions
of lives worldwide; and
WHEREAS, In developing countries, where water collection can
consume 25% of the day, 1.3 billion people are gaining access to
safe drinking water through initiatives of the United Nations
and other global entities; and
WHEREAS, Public and private entities across all continents
must pursue unified water conservation work and continued
investment in water infrastructure to make further progress; and
WHEREAS, The first "World Water Day" observance stemmed from

the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and
Development; and
WHEREAS, The 2017 "World Water Day" observance is focusing on
how wastewater is perceived as a valuable resource and its safe
management as an efficient investment in the health of humans
and ecosystems; and
WHEREAS, Nearly half of the world's workers, approximately
1.5 billion people, are employed in water-related sectors; and
WHEREAS, UN-Water has partnered with the International Labour
Organization for the official "World Water Day" ceremonies in
Geneva, Switzerland; and
WHEREAS, Various stakeholders are planning other events
worldwide; and
WHEREAS, Nongovernmental organizations in India are
conducting water flash mobs to raise awareness of protecting
water resources; and
WHEREAS, Veterans Without Orders has mobilized a worldwide
network of military veterans to confront global water
challenges; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives affirms that clean
water resources are essential to maintaining human health and
environmental integrity, alleviating poverty and hunger and
instituting global sustainable development; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives notes that water
quantity, water quality and equal access to water resources
positively impacts homes and workplaces and drives socioeconomic
transformation; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize March
22, 2017, as "World Water Day" in Pennsylvania in conjunction
with the 2017 "World Water Day" international observance
