A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of September 2016 as "Prostate Cancer
Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania and acknowledging the
importance of raising public awareness of the threat and
causes of prostate cancer.
WHEREAS, Prostate cancer is a disease in which normal cells
in the prostate gland begin to change and grow uncontrollably,
forming a mass called a tumor; and
WHEREAS, Some prostate cancers grow very slowly and may not
cause problems for years; and
WHEREAS, Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer
diagnosed in men in the United States and is the most common
cancer among men in this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Data published by the Department of Health show that
prostate cancer accounted for the largest percentage of all
cancer cases diagnosed in men in this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
reports that prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of
cancer death in American men, after lung cancer; and

WHEREAS, One in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate
cancer in his lifetime; and
WHEREAS, A new case occurs every 2.4 minutes and a man dies
from prostate cancer every 19.1 minutes; and
WHEREAS, The chance of developing prostate cancer increases
rapidly after 50 years of age, and approximately 6 in 10 cases
are found in men over 65 years of age; and
WHEREAS, Men whose fathers or brothers have prostate cancer
are twice as likely to develop the disease; and
WHEREAS, African-American men are 64% more likely than
Caucasian men to be diagnosed with prostate cancer and twice as
likely to die from it; and
WHEREAS, Symptoms of prostate cancer may include difficult,
frequent or painful urination, blood in the urine or semen and
pain in the back, hips or pelvis that does not go away; and
WHEREAS, Approximately one-half of men do not realize that
they are at risk of developing prostate cancer; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of September
2016 as "Prostate Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania and
acknowledge the importance of raising public awareness of the
threat and causes of prostate cancer.
