A RESOLUTION
Designating the week of July 4 through 10, 2016, as "Whiskey
Rebellion Heritage Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The Whiskey Rebellion was the first test of the
power of the new national government under the Constitution of
the United States; and
WHEREAS, The Whiskey Rebellion is considered to be one of the
five most important events in early American history; and
WHEREAS, The Whiskey Rebellion marks the only time in
American history that a standing President took command of
Federal troops; and
WHEREAS, The Whiskey Rebellion marks the first time that
Federal troops were used to put down an uprising; and
WHEREAS, The Whiskey Rebellion took place in western
Pennsylvania from 1791 to 1794 in protest of a Federal excise
tax on whiskey; and
WHEREAS, The City of Washington, Pennsylvania, annually
celebrates the spirit of our past and the history of the Whiskey

Rebellion through a festival that includes historic
reenactments, period exhibitions, family fun, frontier art,
heritage music and food and other entertainment; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of July 4
through 10, 2016, as "Whiskey Rebellion Heritage Week" in
Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That all residents of Pennsylvania be encouraged to
learn more about the Whiskey Rebellion and the events that
helped shaped early America.
