A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of September 2015 as "Ovarian Cancer
Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer is the ninth most common cancer among
women and the fifth leading cause of cancer death among women;
and
WHEREAS, Approximately 21,980 women are diagnosed with
ovarian cancer each year and more than 14,000 women in the
United States die from ovarian cancer each year; and
WHEREAS, No adequate screening test exists for ovarian
cancer; and
WHEREAS, Most cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed at Stage
III or later when the cancer already has begun to spread to
lymph nodes and outside of the pelvis; and
WHEREAS, Early detection improves the chances of survival,
with a 93% five-year survival rate if detected at the earliest
stages; and

WHEREAS, Every woman is at risk for ovarian cancer regardless
of age, heritage or medical history; and
WHEREAS, Many women who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer
have a genetic history that may include carrying the BRCA
mutation gene and a family history of ovarian cancer; and
WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer typically occurs in women in their
fifties and sixties, with a median age of 63; and
WHEREAS, Symptoms are often subtle and easily confused with
other ailments, including bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain,
difficulty eating or feeling full quickly, urinary urgency or
frequency, weight gain, backaches, shortness of breath, extreme
fatigue and nausea; and
WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer awareness and education are important
factors in diagnosis and treatment; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of September
2015 as "Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
