A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the 25th anniversary of the Americans with
Disabilities Act on July 26, 2015.
WHEREAS, The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed
into law on July 26, 1990, by President George H. W. Bush; and
WHEREAS, The ADA is one of America's most important pieces of
legislation prohibiting discrimination; and
WHEREAS, The purpose of the ADA is to ensure that people with
disabilities enjoy the same rights and opportunities as everyone
else; and
WHEREAS, The ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals
with disabilities in all areas of public life; and
WHEREAS, In 2013, an estimated 12.8% of all Americans
reported having a disability; and
WHEREAS, In Pennsylvania, that number increased to an
estimated 13.4%; and
WHEREAS, Of those estimated 12.8% of Americans with a

disability, an estimated 34.5% were employed in 2013; and
WHEREAS, In Pennsylvania, the number of employed individuals
with a disability decreased to an estimated 33.6%; and
WHEREAS, Of those individuals with a disability in
Pennsylvania, an estimated 29.8% were living below the poverty
line in 2013; and
WHEREAS, Despite the significant benefits of the ADA, the
high rates of unemployment and individuals living below the
poverty line demonstrate that significant barriers still exist
for people living with disabilities; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the 25th anniversary of
the Americans with Disabilities Act on July 26, 2015.
