A RESOLUTION
Recognizing May 9, 2015, as "National Association of Letter
Carriers Food Drive Day" in Pennsylvania and commending the
National Association of Letter Carriers for its humanitarian
efforts to eliminate hunger.
WHEREAS, On Saturday, May 9, 2015, the National Association
of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct the 23rd annual NALC
"Stamp Out Hunger" food drive to combat hunger; and
WHEREAS, This is the largest one-day food drive in the
nation, which is held in all states and territories of the
United States; and
WHEREAS, On that day, letter carriers will collect
nonperishable donations as they deliver mail along their postal
routes; and
WHEREAS, The food will be collected in over 10,000
communities by letter carriers and other volunteers; and
WHEREAS, Donations will be delivered to food banks, pantries
and shelters that serve the area where the donations are
collected; and

WHEREAS, The summer months are a particularly critical time
as donations and supplies are low and millions of children's
school lunch programs are suspended until fall so families must
find alternate sources of nutrition; and
WHEREAS, Letter carriers see these families every day as they
deliver the mail, and this food drive is one way to help
alleviate their plight; and
WHEREAS, Postal patrons are encouraged to participate by
leaving donations by their mailboxes on May 9; and
WHEREAS, Cosponsors of this year's drive include the United
States Postal Service, Valpak, Inc., the Feeding America
organization, Valassis, Inc., local United Ways, the AFL-CIO and
America's Second Harvest Food Bank Network; and
WHEREAS, Since the inception of the food drive in 1993, local
letter carriers have delivered more than 2.1 million pounds of
food to Second Harvest and its network of member agencies;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize May 9, 2015, as "National
Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive Day" in Pennsylvania;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That the National Association of Letter Carriers
and its cosponsors be commended for their humanitarian efforts
to stamp out hunger; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the residents of this Commonwealth be
commended for their past participation in this food drive and
are encouraged to generously contribute to this year's effort to
help feed the hungry.
