A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of May 10 through 16, 2015, as "National
Hospital Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's hospitals deliver health care
services to all the people of this Commonwealth, providing acute
inpatient care, as well as outpatient, emergency, behavioral
health, rehabilitation, long-term and home care services; and
WHEREAS, Specialized hospital care is provided by 34 trauma
centers, six burn centers and 13 critical access hospitals that
provide care for the State's most rural population; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is home to six academic medical centers
and numerous teaching hospitals and medical schools, which train
future health care providers and invest in critical health
research; and
WHEREAS, "National Hospital Week" dates back to 1921 in
Chicago as an event to build trust after the Spanish flu
outbreak; and
WHEREAS, The celebration serves as a reminder that hospitals

are foundations of the communities that build them, and that
hospitals serve people in every community from all walks of
life; and
WHEREAS, "National Hospital Week" celebrates hospitals and
the men and women who support the health of their communities
through dedication and compassionate care; and
WHEREAS, The theme for "National Hospital Week" this year is
"Where Miracles Happen Every Day"; and
WHEREAS, Hospitals today are multidimensional environments
that offer every medical specialty and also focus on population
health, prevention and wellness; and
WHEREAS, Hospitals provide free care to those who have no
health care insurance or inadequate insurance coverage,
providing more than $1 billion in uncompensated care annually;
and
WHEREAS, Hospitals contributed $111 billion to Pennsylvania's
economy during 2014; and
WHEREAS, Hospitals are among the leading employers in their
communities, providing nearly 591,000 total jobs, directly and
indirectly; and
WHEREAS, Hospitals are working with many other health and
social service stakeholders in their communities to form
partnerships for a healthy Pennsylvania; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of May 10
through 16, 2015, as "National Hospital Week" in Pennsylvania;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Senate urge its members to visit the
hospitals in their districts in recognition of the vital role
that hospitals play in Pennsylvania's communities and health
care delivery system.
