A RESOLUTION
Observing the month of January 2015 as "Pennsylvania Thrift
Month," observing the week of January 17 through 23, 2015, as
"National Thrift Week" and calling on individuals, families
and government at all levels to exercise thrift and fiscal
responsibility.
WHEREAS, Annual National Thrift Week observances from 1916
through 1966 highlighted the value of hard work and fiscal
discipline and the cultivation of thrift as an American ideal;
and
WHEREAS, Communities nationwide first celebrated National
Thrift Week in 1916 with the opening of school savings accounts
for children and workplace savings programs; and
WHEREAS, The 1916 observance was launched on January 17, the
birthday anniversary of early American inventor, author,
printer, scientist, philanthropist, statesman and diplomat
Benjamin Franklin, who was recognized as the "American apostle
of thrift"; and
WHEREAS, National Thrift Week is no longer celebrated or
fully recognized; and

WHEREAS, The nation and many individuals and families are
facing difficult financial conditions today; and
WHEREAS, Recession, unemployment and widespread pay cuts have
spurred individuals and governments to reassess financial
practices; and
WHEREAS, Restoring and instilling thrift and fiscal
responsibility as guiding principles for individuals and
governments can aid our return to an era of sound financial
management and economic prosperity; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate observe the month of January 2015
as "Pennsylvania Thrift Month," observe the week of January 17
through 23, 2015, as "National Thrift Week" and call on
individuals, families and government at all levels to exercise
thrift and fiscal responsibility.
