A RESOLUTION
Congratulating the students and faculty of Saint Joseph's
University in Philadelphia for attaining the title of Grand
Champion among the Pennsylvania competitors in the 2016
RecycleMania competition.
WHEREAS, RecycleMania is the nation's premier waste reduction
and recycling competition; and
WHEREAS, RecycleMania mobilizes colleges and universities to
benchmark and improve efforts to reduce or eliminate waste; and
WHEREAS, Competing colleges and universities are ranked
according to how much recycling, trash and food waste they
collect over a two-month period; and
WHEREAS, RecycleMania began in January 2001 as a challenge
between Ohio University and Miami University, when the recycling
coordinator at each school was looking for a way to motivate
their student bodies to recycle more; and
WHEREAS, The two schools decided to take advantage of the
existing sports rivalry between them and proposed a challenge to

see who could recycle the most; and
WHEREAS, The next year, other universities were invited to
join the competition and RecycleMania has been growing ever
since; and
WHEREAS, Beginning in 2004, RecycleMania partnered with the
United States Environmental Protection Agency's WasteWise
program to develop a website and provide administrative support
for the program; and
WHEREAS, The 2016 tournament featured 350 schools
participating from 48 states, the District of Columbia and
Canada, with an enrollment of 4.4 million students; and
WHEREAS, This year, more than 20 Pennsylvania colleges and
universities participated in the program; and
WHEREAS, During the 2016 competition, participating schools
recycled or composted 79.3 million pounds of recyclables and
organic materials, preventing the release of 122,000 metric tons
of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, equivalent to preventing
annual emissions from 24,000 cars; and
WHEREAS, Saint Joseph's University was the Grand Champion
among the Pennsylvania competitors, with a recycling rate of
48.9%; and
WHEREAS, Overall, Saint Joseph's University's recycling rates
ranked 39th among all participants in the United States and
Canada; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the
students and faculty of Saint Joseph's University in
Philadelphia for attaining the title of Grand Champion among the
Pennsylvania competitors in the 2016 RecycleMania competition;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize all the
