A RESOLUTION
Encouraging the Department of Health to provide programs to
firehouses in this Commonwealth that focus on bladder cancer
education, prevention and early detection and to provide
voluntary testing for each firefighter in this Commonwealth.
WHEREAS, Sixty-eight percent of firefighters will develop
cancer in their lifetimes; and
WHEREAS, Firefighters under 60 years of age have higher rates
of bladder cancer compared to the general population; and
WHEREAS, Because of the high incidence of this type of cancer
in firefighters, some firehouses in this country offer testing
for bladder cancer; and
WHEREAS, Urine tumor marker protein tests for NMP22 are
approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for
bladder cancer testing; and
WHEREAS, It is recommended that active firefighters be tested
every three years for bladder cancer and retired firefighters be
tested every year for bladder cancer; and

WHEREAS, As firehouses become more aware of the higher risks
of bladder cancer in firefighters, more firehouses are
incorporating bladder cancer testing into their wellness
initiatives; and
WHEREAS, Many firehouses in this country are also promoting
cancer prevention techniques, such as showering and changing
clothes after a job, cleaning and drying gear after each use and
exchanging and washing hoods after each use; and
WHEREAS, It is important to ensure that every firefighter in
this Commonwealth understands his or her increased risk for
bladder cancer, the steps that can be taken to decrease that
risk and how they can be tested for bladder cancer; therefore be
it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage the
Department of Health to provide programs to firehouses in this
Commonwealth that focus on bladder cancer education, prevention
and early detection; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage the
Department of Health to also provide voluntary testing for each
firefighter in this Commonwealth.
