A RESOLUTION
Honoring the memory of Samuel Staten, Sr., and extending
heartfelt condolences to his family.
WHEREAS, Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Samuel Staten, Sr.,
moved to Philadelphia as a child and went to school in the
Philadelphia school system; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Staten's father was a founding member of the
Laborer's Union in the Philadelphia region; and
WHEREAS, Following in the footsteps of his father, Mr. Staten
was a long-time fixture in Philadelphia labor organizing; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Staten worked as a construction laborer until
1970, when he became a field representative and was later
elected as business manager for Laborers Local 332; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Staten continued to serve in Laborers Local 332
until his retirement in March 2010; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Staten dedicated his life to improving labor
conditions, sitting on boards of numerous funds and councils;
and
WHEREAS, When awarded a generous check by the members of the

Friends of Labor Committee at a dinner held in his honor in
1987, Mr. Staten donated the check to four charities; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Staten's selflessness inspired the creation of
The Laborers' District Council Charity Fund, which is now called
the Samuel Staten, Sr., Charitable Trust; and
WHEREAS, The Samuel Staten, Sr., Charitable Trust has raised
millions of dollars for charity; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the memory
of Samuel Staten, Sr., and extend heartfelt condolences to his
family.
