A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the founding of the
Borough of Boyertown, Berks County, in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, In 1866, 150 years ago this fall, the Borough of
Boyertown in Berks County was first incorporated by the
Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, The history of the town dates back to the early 17th
century, as it became a land for religious refuge sought
by German settlers who moved westward from the Philadelphia
region; and
WHEREAS, The region has been home to excellent farmers,
craftsmen and entrepreneurs, including Thomas Potts and Daniel
and Henry Boyer and a host of other hard working community
members; and
WHEREAS, The residents of Boyertown have had a long legacy of
trade over the "Great Road," now known as U.S. Route 422; and

WHEREAS, The Borough of Boyertown is the site of one of the
first intersections of a major railway and roadway in Berks
County; and
WHEREAS, These integrative infrastructures brought great
prosperity to the region in the mid to late 19th and early 20th
centuries; and
WHEREAS, Blacksmiths, miners, masons and farmers came
together over these trade lines to send their goods all over the
Mid-Atlantic Region; and
WHEREAS, In 1908, the tragedy of the Rhoads Opera House fire
took the lives of 171 opera goers and brought about the early
stages of fire and exit safety standards; and
WHEREAS, During the past 150 years, the people of Boyertown
have built a varied and interesting place in history that spans
across military, manufacturing, mining, transportation and
medicine, among other sectors; and
WHEREAS, The Borough of Boyertown has, during its history,
been home to a number of important employers and landmarks,
including the former Boyertown Auto Body Works, the former
Boyertown Burial Casket Company and Drug Plastics and Glass, as
well as the Colebrookdale Railroad, a Civil War-era railroad
spur, which is being revitalized; and
WHEREAS, May 2016 marks the beginning of Boyertown's 150th
anniversary celebration, which will welcome both residents and
visitors and feature a variety of events, including a time
capsule opening, a fun run, a parade and a block party;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
150th anniversary of the founding of the Borough of Boyertown,
Berks County, in Pennsylvania.
