A RESOLUTION
Recognizing and supporting "National Train Day" on May 14, 2016.
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is often synonymous with railroads,
whose development helped make the Commonwealth an industrial
power in the region and the country; and
WHEREAS, Amtrak was founded on May 1, 1971, bringing together
the passenger train operations of 20 separate rail companies,
including the former Pennsylvania Railroad and Erie Lackawanna
Railway; and
WHEREAS, Amtrak continues to invest in the nation's rail
infrastructure, increasing access to high-speed rail and
implementing new technology for faster, safer, more efficient
and more comfortable rail travel; and
WHEREAS, Amtrak trains and infrastructure carry commuters to
and from work in congested metropolitan areas, providing a

reliable rail option and reducing congestion on roads and in the
skies; and
WHEREAS, For many rural Americans, Amtrak represents the only
major intercity transportation link to the rest of the country;
and
WHEREAS, Passenger trains provide a more fuel-efficient
transportation system, cleaner transportation alternatives and
energy security; and
WHEREAS, Amtrak annually serves more than 31 million
passengers, employs more than 20,000 people and operates 300
trains a day on more than 21,300 miles of track with some trains
operating at speeds of 150 miles per hour; and
WHEREAS, Community railroad stations are a source of civic
pride, a gateway to more than 500 of our country's communities
and a tool for economic growth; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and
support "National Train Day" on May 14, 2016.
