INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
APRIL 29, 2016
A RESOLUTION
Designating May 2 through 8, 2016, as "Days of Remembrance of
the Victims of the Holocaust" and May 5, 2016, as "Holocaust
Remembrance Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The Holocaust was the state-sponsored, systematic
persecution and annihilation of the European Jewry by Nazi
Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945, during
which time 6 million Jews were murdered; and
WHEREAS, Roma (Gypsies), persons with disabilities and Poles
were also targeted for destruction or decimation for racial,
ethnic or national reasons; and
WHEREAS, Millions more persons, including gay men and women,
Jehovah's Witnesses, Soviet prisoners of war and political
dissidents, suffered grievous oppression and death under Nazi

tyranny; and
WHEREAS, The people of this Commonwealth should always
remember the atrocities committed by the Nazis so that such
horrors are never repeated; and
WHEREAS, The people of this Commonwealth should continually
rededicate themselves to the principle of equal justice for all;
and
WHEREAS, The people of this Commonwealth should remain
vigilant against all tyranny and recognize that bigotry provides
a breeding ground for tyranny to flourish; and
WHEREAS, May 5, 2016, recognized in the Hebrew calendar as 27
Nisan 5776, has been designated internationally as a "Day of
Remembrance of Victims of the Nazi Holocaust" and is also known
as Yom Hashoah; and
WHEREAS, This date further coincides with the anniversary of
the Warsaw ghetto uprising in German-occupied Poland from April
19 through May 16, 1943; and
WHEREAS, It is appropriate for the people of this
Commonwealth to join in the international commemoration of this
solemn event; and
WHEREAS, By marking this occasion in memory of the millions
of victims of the Holocaust, we hope to overcome prejudice and
inhumanity through education, vigilance and resistance;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 2
through 8, 2016, as "Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the
Holocaust" and May 5, 2016, as "Holocaust Remembrance Day" in
Pennsylvania.
