A RESOLUTION
Designating May 2, 2016, as "Nonketotic Hyperglycinemia
Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH), also known as
glycine encephalopathy, is a severe and rare disorder resulting
from the inability to break down glycine, a neurotransmitter,
which leads to a buildup of glycine in the blood and spinal
fluid affecting nervous tissues, including the brain, causing
seizures, breathing and feeding difficulties, muscle limpness
and lethargy; and
WHEREAS, NKH usually becomes apparent after birth and many
babies with the disorder do not survive infancy; and
WHEREAS, NKH affects 1 out of every 60,000 births and there
are fewer than 500 children worldwide living with NKH; and
WHEREAS, There is currently no cure for NKH and there are
very few treatment options available; and
WHEREAS, It is of vital importance to raise awareness of this

disease; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 2,
2016, as "Nonketotic Hyperglycinemia Awareness Day" in
Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
importance of raising awareness of nonketotic hyperglycinemia in
order to improve the lives of those affected by it.
