A RESOLUTION
Designating April 16, 2016, as "4p-/Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome
Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, 4p- syndrome occurs due to a chromosomal deletion
resulting in various physical anomalies and developmental
delays; and
WHEREAS, 4p- syndrome can result in Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome,
identifiable by specific characteristic facial appearance,
growth delay, intellectual disabilities and seizures; and
WHEREAS, While all people with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome have
4p- syndrome, not all people with 4p- syndrome are considered to
have Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome; and
WHEREAS, It is estimated that 4p- syndrome occurs in 1 out of
every 50,000 births, with an estimate that 30% will die within
the first few years of life; and
WHEREAS, With advances in medical technology and community

awareness, death rates are decreasing, but 4p- syndrome has no
cure; and
WHEREAS, Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome is the most common fourth
chromosome deletion disorder diagnosed; and
WHEREAS, Because the fourth chromosome deleted is named
4p16.3, April 16 (4/16) was chosen to bring awareness to this
genetic condition; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate April
16, 2016, as "4p-/Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome Awareness Day" in
Pennsylvania.
