A RESOLUTION
Recognizing February 29, 2016, as "Rare Disease Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Nearly one in ten people living in this Commonwealth
has a rare disease and, according to the National Health
Institute, nearly 30 million Americans have rare diseases; and
WHEREAS, A disease is considered rare if it affects fewer
than 200,000 Americans; and
WHEREAS, There are nearly 7,000 such diseases; and
WHEREAS, Rare diseases tend to be lifelong and approximately
two-thirds of those affected are children; and
WHEREAS, "Rare Disease Day" is observed nationwide by
millions across the country and by the National Organization for
Rare Disorders to promote special awareness of rare diseases;
and
WHEREAS, Special events and activities are planned in

schools, hospitals, universities and medical schools along with
the sharing of stories by those affected by a rare disease;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize
February 29, 2016, as "Rare Disease Day" in Pennsylvania in
order to let our citizens living with rare diseases know that,
while their diseases are rare, they are not alone.
