A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 25th anniversary of the deadly Scud missile
attack on February 25, 1991, during Operation Desert Shield
and honoring the lives lost during the attack.
WHEREAS, On February 25, 1991, an Iraqi Scud missile struck
an army barracks in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, far from the front
lines where the ground war was being waged, killing a total of
28 soldiers and wounding 99 others; and
WHEREAS, The Greensburg-based 14th Quartermaster Detachment,
an Army Reserve water purification unit, suffered the most
casualties, losing 13 of its 69 members; and
WHEREAS, The missile eluded United States military tracking
until two minutes before it hit as it was not traveling in the
normal arc of a Scud; and
WHEREAS, No Patriot missile was fired to intercept the Scud

because the Patriot system was temporarily shut down for repair;
and
WHEREAS, The 28 soldiers killed represented more fatalities
than were inflicted by the previous 70 Scud missile attacks in
Israel, Saudi Arabia and smaller Gulf nations combined; and
WHEREAS, Almost one-fifth of the 141 deaths suffered by
United States Armed Forces during the entirety of the war were
caused by this attack; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
25th anniversary of the deadly Scud missile attack on February
25, 1991, during Operation Desert Shield and honor the lives
lost during the attack.
