A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the year 2016 as "The Year to Cure Cancer" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the
United States; and
WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society projects there will be
595,690 cancer deaths this year; and
WHEREAS, Cancer is the generic name for a subset of more than
100 diseases; and
WHEREAS, The body is made up of trillions of living cells;
healthy body cells divide to make new cells and die in an
orderly way; and
WHEREAS, During the early years of a person's life, normal
cells divide faster to allow the person to grow, and after the
person becomes an adult, most cells divide only to replace worn-

out or dying cells or to repair injuries; and
WHEREAS, Cancer starts when cells in a part of the body start
to grow out of control and, instead of dying, continue to grow
and form new, abnormal cells; and
WHEREAS, Cancer cells can invade other tissues when the
cancer cells get into the body's bloodstream or lymph vessels, a
process called metastasis; and
WHEREAS, The President and the Congress of the United States
recently made a historic investment to fight cancer with a
strong appropriation to the National Institutes of Health; and
WHEREAS, The Vice President of the United States has been
tasked by the President of the United States to lead the effort
to fight cancer in the President's last year in office; and
WHEREAS, The Commonwealth strongly supports this initiative
and urges continued investment in cancer research within this
Commonwealth; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
year 2016 as "The Year to Cure Cancer" in Pennsylvania.
